They believe that they have fooled others into thinking they are more capable than they actually are. Leaders experiencing imposter syndrome often doubt their abilities, feel undeserving of their leadership role, and worry about being exposed as a fraud.

Imposter Syndrome can significantly impact leaders and their organizations because it leads to reduced confidence, self-doubt, and hesitation in decision-making. It can also affect a leader’s ability to lead effectively as they may avoid taking necessary risks or shy away from challenging situations. Additionally, if not managed properly, it can lead to stress and burnout.

Looking back 18 years ago, in my early leadership career, I was assigned to work on a big project with talented colleagues in a banking company and a top-tier, world-class consulting firm. At that time, I wasn’t sure if I would fit within these high-caliber groups. The significant scope of responsibility and the company of skilled individuals around me encouraged a spirit of introspection and growth. This marked the recognizable beginning of Imposter Syndrome, during which I embarked on a journey of self-discovery, seeking to continually align my skills and standards with those of my talented colleagues and peers.

I learned that the key to overcoming Imposter Syndrome wasn’t about constantly comparing myself to talented individuals. It was about shifting my thinking towards a more positive and productive perspective. I realized that my success wasn’t solely about proving myself to others but about finding ways to contribute and help the team achieve its objectives.

It was a turning point when I began to manage myself before attempting to manage anything else. I shifted my focus towards delivering value to the team and the organization, not focusing on my ego. I discovered that this mindset shift was not unique to my experience but could resonate with anyone at some stage in their career.
