With a belief that major life transformations come with two steps forward, and one step back, Energy Coach Adam W. Barney is on a mission to help people unlock goals, build energy, and stay accountable—and ultimately, build a resilient path forward. Read on to learn more.

Life is not a linear journey for anyone, and along your unique path, you will encounter major bumps, steep hills, and rough terrain. But the real challenge is not getting through these tough moments as quickly as possible but how you navigate them to keep pushing ahead.

Energy Coach and author of Make Your Own Glass Half Full, Adam W. Barney, has dedicated his life to guiding individuals and organizations through transformative growth and sustainable change. Whether recounting his experiences as a corporate leader or his volunteer work post-Hurricane Katrina, Barney’s narrative is steeped in the values of autonomy, optimism, and connection.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Barney to learn more about his unique path and how it led him to help others stay the course.

Barney’s first transformative experience began with volunteering in New Orleans, just 18 months after Hurricane Katrina. “My wife and I met about a year and a half after Hurricane Katrina hit the city of New Orleans,” he recalls. “That was a crazy place to step into because it was with an organization here in Boston called Boston Cares. They normally, in the day-to-day, do community work locally… But this was a very unique situation in America.”

Barney reflects on the energy of that time: “There were groups of over a hundred volunteers coming from all corners of the world, staying in a place all together. And who’s it being run by? AmeriCorps volunteers around the age of 16 to 22-year-olds who were directing people where to go, and what to do. There was this amazing energy down there from all the volunteers.”

His bond with New Orleans extended well beyond his initial trip. “That ended up being the first of seven times that I went down there to volunteer… I went there again and again,” he says. It’s also where he met his wife, Paula, under the most unconventional circumstances: “That’s where our relationship began.”

From those early days of service, Barney cultivated a profound sense of optimism and a commitment to the community. These themes resonate deeply in his energy coaching practice, Adam W. Barney. “It’s about this personal accountability and personal energy that comes through having conversations, stepping back, and listening to people,” Barney explains. His coaching is centered on the belief that progress comes from breaking down monumental challenges into tangible, actionable steps. “Imagine you have a 3-ton slab of marble put in front of you and you’re Michelangelo. How many chips does it take to make the marble slab into a beautiful statue?”

Recognized as one of the top 15 coaches in Boston in 2023, Barney’s philosophy rests on two pillars: optimism and autonomy. “It’s about transformational change from a holistic level,” he notes. He emphasizes the interconnectedness of personal and professional growth, illustrating this through stories of clients who navigated personal trials while achieving professional milestones. “One of the stories in the book that I get into, I was probably 10 years old, playing little league baseball… I spent the ride home from that game thinking about why there was only one girl in the league. I remember thinking, ‘That’s not right.’”

For Barney, coaching goes far beyond setting goals; it’s about fostering a vision for growth. “You have to design the vision that builds the system and then the goals that fit within that system.” His methodology blends structured tools like Ikigai, the Japanese concept for finding purpose, with personalized strategies. “It’s not about a three-month engagement or a six-month engagement. It’s about a multi-year transformational guidance to keep them moving forward.”

Barney’s approach also bridges technology and human connection. “I bring my coaching clients into this realm of whatever their preferred communication channel is… whether it’s Slack, text, or email. But it’s really about toeing the line from a flexibility standpoint to holistically guide my clients and allow them to build that path towards their vision.”

A significant portion of Barney’s impact lies in empowering underrepresented groups and micro-businesses. Through his involvement with programs like the Comcast RISE grant, he has worked with entrepreneurs ranging from restaurant owners to educational service providers. “These are the clients where this really resonates,” he says. “Think about David Epstein’s book Range, where generalists can thrive in a specialized world.”

Despite his focus on others, Barney is no stranger to personal challenges. “I’ve always faced challenges through my own life… I lost my mom 10 years ago to ALS.” This experience spurred him to get involved in ALS research and advocacy, a cause he remains passionate about.

Barney’s philosophy of “make your own glass half full”—the title of his book—epitomizes his work and personal ethos. “Throw that glass out, take your own glass, and fill it up yourself,” he urges. It’s a call to action for everyone to embrace optimism and autonomy as tools for navigating life’s hurdles, and ultimately, learning how to stay the path no matter what comes your way.

Whether coaching corporate executives, aiding small businesses, or inspiring communities, Barney’s story is one of an individual with a kind, giving heart. In his downtime, you can find Barney spending time with his wife, two daughters, and two dogs—or, increasing his positive vibrations through music.
